Places of Faith

Rome, the capital of Christianity, offers guests a multitude of experiences from ancient structures to Christian relics. Lesser known is Umbria Mistica (mystical Umbria), so named because many saints were born in this region, including St. Claire, St. Benedict and St. Francis. Guests will visit the Umbrian towns of Assisi, Perugia and Orvieto. The tour continues with visits to Bologna, Florence and Siena, and a special trip to Macerata and Loreto.

Day 1: Rome

  • Arrive in Rome. Guests will be provided private transportation to their hotel.
  • Guests will take a walking tour through the historic center of Rome, visiting and learning about the city’s main squares and fountains.
  • Guests will stay overnight in Rome.

Day 2: Ancient Rome

  • Breakfast will be served at the hotel.
  • Guests will have a private tour of the interior of the monumental Colosseum. Other sites include the Circus Maximus, the Baths of Caracalla, and the Pyramid of Cestia.
  • Guests will stay overnight in Rome.

Day 3: Vatican City and Christian Rome

  • Breakfast will be served at the hotel.
  • In the morning, guests will enjoy a private tour of the Vatican Museums, Sistine Chapel and St. Peter’s Basilica.
  • In the afternoon, guests will tour Christian Rome, visiting the Basilica Saint John Lateran, Basilica Saint Mary Major and the Basilica of the Holy Cross in Jerusalem.
  • Guests will stay overnight at the hotel in Rome.

Day 4: Orvieto–Assisi

  • Breakfast will be served at the hotel in Rome.
  • In the morning, guests will be driven to the region of Umbria, where they’ll stop in Orvieto to visit the 14th century Orvieto Cathedral dedicated to the Assumption of the Virgin Mary. Other sites include St. Patrick’s Well, constructed in the 16th century during the Sack of Rome, and the “underground world” of Etruscan tunnels and grottoes.
  • Afterwards, guests will discover the serene town of Assisi, the birthplace of Saint Francis and Saint Clare. Assisi holds a wealth of treasures including Roman ruins, frescos and paintings, basilicas and tombs.
  • Guests will stay overnight in Assisi.

Day 5: Perugia–Gubbio

  • Breakfast will be served at the hotel in Assisi.
  • Guests will travel to Perugia, the capital of Umbria, a beautiful city surrounded by ancient walls and a stunning landscape. The tour will include the historic center that offers many examples of Etruscan, Roman and Gothic architecture.
  • From there, it’s a visit to Gubbio, a town that retains much of its medieval character. It’s the town where Saint Francis met the wolf and considered the place of his conversion.
  • Guest will stay overnight in Assisi.

Day 6: Macerata–Loreto

  • Breakfast will be served at the hotel in Assisi.
  • In the morning, guests will travel to the Marche region to visit to the historic center of Macerata, then to the nearby town of Loreto to visit the Basilica of the Holy House of the Virgin Mary.
  • Guests will stay overnight in Assisi.

Day 7: Città di Castello–Arezzo

  • Breakfast will be served at the hotel in Assisi.
  • On the way back to Tuscany, we’ll stop in Città di Castello, a town with Etruscan and Roman origins, today it is an ideal city for art lovers.
  • Then you will go to another ancient city, Arezzo, where director Roberto Benigni filmed the movie, Life is Beautiful.
  • Guests will stay overnight in the Chianti area.

Day 8: Siena–Monteriggioni

  • Breakfast will be served at the hotel in the Chianti area.
  • Guests will visit one of the most preserved medieval cities in the world, Siena, an artistic city with charming streets, historic towers, artisan shops and palaces.
  • The tour will end with a visit to Monteriggioni, a walled town known for its fortifications and watchtowers.
  • Guests will stay overnight in the Chianti area.

Day 9: San Gimignano–Chianti

  • Breakfast will be served at the hotel in the Chianti area.
  • The tour will start with a visit to San Gimignano, famous for its high medieval towers, and will continue with visits to towns such as Radda, Castellina and Gaiole. This area is famous for Chianti wines and its lush panoramic views.
  • Guests will stay overnight in the Chianti area.

Day 10: Val D’Orcia (Orcia Valley)

  • Breakfast will be served at the hotel.
  • Guests will tour the Val D’Orcia with its gently rolling hills and cypress trees. They will visit the medieval towns of Montepulciano, San Quirico and Pienza. The serene landscape was backdrop in several films including Gladiator and The English Patient.
  • After the tour, guests will return to Rome and stay overnight.

Day 11: Rome

  • Breakfast will be served at the hotel.
  • Guests will be driven from their hotel to the airport.
